Preview: Hexyz Force

Hexyz Force is a polished, nice looking PSP role-playing game from the folks at Sting, makers of games like Yggdra Union and Riviera: The Promised Land. Set to release in late May, this game is actually like two games in one, with independent story lines following two different characters through the same narrative arc.

Preview: Transformers: War For Cyberton

Transformers: War For Cyberton on the Nintendo DS is being made by Vicarious Visions, the veteran studio behind other, recent well-regarded portable 3D Transformers action games. Like the previous ones, the new entry will be sold in Autobot and Decepticon versions, though this time the games won’t link to a web-based meta-game war between the owners of each.

Preview: Final Fantasy XIII

Next month, Final Fantasy XIII will be released to great fanfare around the gaming world. Expectations are simply huge for a series that has consistently set the standards for role-playing games over the past 20 years. I was allowed a first play of the game a few weeks ago – today the embargo lifts and I can share with you some of my impressions.

Preview: Glitch

The news started to come out about Glitch, the new massively multiplayer online game that a few of the key cogs that built Flickr had been developing in secret for much of last year. I got to see a still relatively early build of the game. It is both beautiful and impressive.

Preview: SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3

Sony is very much looking forward to the latest entry in the franchise, SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3. Yes, the third game in the Fireteam Bravo side of things, this PSP franchise seems to have slipped under the radar for a while. This is a shame, as some of the features seen here are even ignored in console titles. If you haven’t played a SOCOM title, it might be time to pay attention.

Preview: Battle of the Immortals

In Perfect World Entertainment’s earlier blog entry by Xarfox, readers were treated to what is a surprisingly attractive game. BOI’s character models look nice, and the details of these characters and their equipment (called Soul Gear) are very impressive. Readers also learned that Battle of the Immortals is being developed by an entirely different studio than the majority of PWE games, promising a new and exciting experience for its players.

Preview: Two Worlds II

With a development team twice the size of the original, Two Worlds II is really not just a cheap second ride on the same merry-go-round. And while Two Worlds 1’s 360 version was something of a brute-force port of a fairly complicated PC game, this time around console play comes first – so it should hopefully feel that much slicker in the hand.

Preview: Lucid

In the world of puzzle games involving blocks there isn’t much that hasn’t been done. Blocks have fallen, been paired, been shot, been organized and they’ve been grouped. In short, it’s a bit difficult to do something new in the block puzzle game genre. That’s probably why it took indie game developer Mikko Miettinen over two years to put together his upcoming PC puzzle game Lucid, which appears to deliver yet another new twist to the age old practice of organizing colored blocks.

Preview: City of Eternals on Facebook

The majority of games currently available on Facebook are simple. In fact, some of them lack any depth of any kind and aren’t fun to play for more than few minutes — if that. Now a group of developers who worked on games like EverQuest, Planetside, and Free Realms is planning to deliver what may seem impossible – a true MMORPG on Facebook that will appear to both the hardcore and casual audience, and that game is called City of Eternals.

Preview: Mass Effect 2

Earlier this week, BioWare gave the press a peek at the first hours of Mass Effect 2, the science-fiction role-playing game due out on January 26 for Xbox 360 and PC.

The first moments of the RPG highlight BioWare’s penchant for plot. And it’s evident from the first button press that the developer listened to complaints about the first game. Mass Effect 2 does a great job of easing gamers into combat, but more importantly it continues to spin a great yarn.
