New D&D Board Game Coming in August

“Castle Ravenloft” isn’t the first board game from D&D’s owners, Wizards of the Coast, but it is the company’s first to target the new-wave board game audience of the past decade (think German board games like Catan and Pandemic). D&D reps compared their new game to the latter in their announcement yesterday, describing the game as a “fast-paced,” hour-long take on the D&D formula.

As one of the first easily-modified game engines, Dungeons & Dragons allowed players to customize their experience as much as their imaginations would allow. Just like the experience point and the class system, D&D can also claim moddable, user-generated content as its progeny.

Dungeons & Dragons Prison Ban Upheld

In an opinion issued on Monday, a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit rejected the claims in a lawsuit challenging a ban on the game Dungeons & Dragons by the Waupun Correctional Institution in Wisconsin.

The suit was brought by a prisoner, Kevin T. Singer, who argued that his First Amendment and 14th Amendment rights were violated by the prison’s decision to ban the game and confiscate his books and other materials, including a 96-page handwritten manuscript he had created for the game.

Hasbro, Atari Tangle over D&D Rights

Dungeons & Dragons owner Hasbro today announced that it has filed suit against longtime gaming partner Atari, alleging that the publisher “may have” struck an unauthorized sublicensing deal with Namco Bandai for Dungeons & Dragons game rights. Currently, there are no announced Atari Dungeons & Dragons projects in which Namco Bandai has any involvement.
